Theotokos
Sold
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of the Theotokos is one of the artist's early works, and forms a Deesis row together with the Christ Pantocrator of Sinai and the Archangel Gabriel.
The Theotokos, the Mother of God, is one of the most venerated images in Byzantine iconography: her gaze, turned toward whoever contemplates her, holds together maternal warmth and mercy, a silent intercession between the faithful and the divine.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood, a technique that allows for a faster execution time without giving up care for the drawing and the structure of the face, following the same Byzantine canon.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
