Cristo Pantocratore
Made to commission
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: a panel prepared with gesso, an incised drawing, thin layers of egg tempera and final highlights. The face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon.
The iconography follows the same model as the Christ Pantocrator kept at Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai, a source drawn upon by generations of icon painters, including Igorski himself in other works. The blessing gesture of the right hand is not a simple act of blessing: in Byzantine tradition it calls for silence and attention, an invitation to stop and listen.
The book Christ holds closed in his hands carries the same meaning: the good news has not yet been spoken to the world. The Gospel remains sealed, waiting, and the face of the Pantocrator holds that silence before the word.
