Cristo Pantocratore del Sinai
Sold
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon draws directly on the Christ Pantocrator kept at Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai.
Dated to the 6th century, the Sinai icon is the oldest surviving image of Christ: it survived the destruction of icons during Byzantine iconoclasm thanks to the monastery's isolation, and became the model from which the entire Pantocrator iconography descends. It is famous for the asymmetry of the face, read by tradition as a reference to Christ's double nature, human and divine.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood, this icon respects the proportions and gesture of the original model, following the techniques and traditions of classical icon painting.
Together with the Theotokos and the Archangel Gabriel it forms a Deesis row.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
