Saint Varus
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Saint Varus was made on private commission for a client.
Varus was a Roman soldier in Egypt, martyred in the early 4th century under the persecution of Maximian after secretly ministering to seven monks imprisoned for their faith. His relics were later kept by the pious widow Cleopatra, who according to tradition obtained, through the saint's intercession, the salvation of her son who had died unbaptized: for this reason Varus is still invoked today on behalf of the unbaptized dead.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood, following the techniques and proportions of the Byzantine iconographic tradition.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
