Santa Caterina d'Alessandria (su tavola)
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Saint Catherine of Alexandria came from a private commission: struck by another icon of the saint seen in the artist's portfolio, a client asked for their own version, this time written in the most traditional technique.
Catherine faced trial and martyrdom without ever renouncing her faith, meeting the scholars summoned to refute her with a steadfastness no threat could break: hers is one of the most celebrated testimonies of fortitude in Christian hagiography.
Her face is inspired, as in the first version, by Fayum portraits and the features of the saint's contemporaries. This time the technique is the most complete of the iconographic tradition: egg tempera on a wood panel prepared with gesso (levkas), with the halo covered in natural gold.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
