Eva Progenitrice
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Eve the Forebear, one of the artist's early works, is a measure icon: in the Russian tradition, the icon of the patron saint is painted to the exact height of the newborn at birth, to accompany them from baptism through their whole life.
Eve, the first woman according to the Genesis narrative, is shown here in a gesture of listening, as the hand of God reaches toward her from a starry sky. It is a rare subject in iconography, reserved for occasions such as this one.
Made on a wood panel with gesso ground and a hand-carved cula, with water gilding and vinyl tempera.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
