San Panteleimone
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Saint Panteleimon, painted in 2020 and given as a gift, is one of the few made in the Russian style, recognisable by the Church Slavonic lettering, as in the icon of Saint Victor, rather than the artist's usual Byzantine/Greek iconography.
Panteleimon, a Greek physician martyred in the early 4th century, is venerated as a healer and patron of physicians: in the icon he holds the box of medical instruments and the probe with which, according to tradition, he treated the sick and the poor free of charge.
Made in vinyl tempera on a wood panel with gesso ground.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
