The Artist

Igor Makhorin (known as IGORSKI)

Painter and iconographer, between Byzantine training and a contemporary language.

Igorski in his studio

Born in Tiraspol, Igorski grew up surrounded by a mix of different cultures and forms of artistic expression. From a young age he was drawn to art, in particular the ancient Byzantine traditions and icon painting, which he studied under local masters.

At the age of 19, a serious injury: both hands broken. It seemed to close the path to painting for good. Yet his passion for art proved stronger.

In 2023, having moved to Italy, Igorski was able to devote himself fully to his life's work. His art is a unique dialogue between different eras.

Working in the style of metaphysical realism, he combines the legacy of ancient techniques (Byzantine art, icon painting, Fayum portraiture, Pompeian painting) with modern artistic practice. This synthesis of the ancient and the contemporary allows him to create works that are deeply personal and timeless.

Identity and logo

The logo weaves together the artist's history and heritage. The letter K is a tribute to his grandmother's ancestors, of Polish origin, bearers of the noble surname Kamiński: a family whose roots reach into the ancient lineage of the Terlecki bishops and clergy, in Galicia.

The brush painting on canvas, the painter's main tool, is the pillar that completes the letter K's composition in the logo.

The crossed red lines are the roots of an ancient symbol: the Ing rune, from which the name Igor descends (from the Scandinavian Ingvar).

For a time he signed his work as Igor Kaminski, until an idea from his friend Filippo put the puzzle pieces together, giving rise to the name he signs with today: Igorski.

Icons for the Church

Beyond private commissions, Igorski also writes icons for parishes and religious communities: since 2010 he has written icons for the analogion (the liturgical lectern) of several churches. He is familiar with the rules and canons of Orthodox iconographic tradition, including consecration practices, and has received the blessing to write Orthodox icons according to tradition.

Theatre and film

Beyond painting, Igorski is also an actor, on stage and on screen.

Emigrants

Theatre · from 2019 to 2021 · Teatro «Kot», Voronezh · directed by A. Proskurjakov

Role of XX in Sławomir Mrożek's play: two Polish émigrés share a basement flat far from home on New Year's Eve. XX is the economic émigré, a pragmatic labourer, set against AA, the dissident intellectual. Igorski played this role for three years running, always around New Year.

The God of War

Theatre · 2020 · Teatro «Kot», Voronezh · directed by A. Proskurjakov

Yasmina Reza's original title is «Le Dieu du carnage»: Teatro «Kot» stages it under the Russian title «Бог войны», rendered here in English as «The God of War». Igorski plays Michel, in a black comedy where a meeting between two couples over their sons' schoolyard fight escalates into open war.

The Pillowman

Theatre · 2021 · Teatro «Kot», Voronezh · directed by A. Proskurjakov

Role of Michal in the stage adaptation of Martin McDonagh's «The Pillowman»: the brother of writer Katurian, at the centre of an interrogation over disturbing stories that seem to mirror real murders. For Igorski, the most psychologically demanding role he has played so far.

Ghosts of Dodo, or 12 Stories of Love

Theatre · 2021 · Teatro «Kot», Voronezh · directed by Sergey Aronin

Multiple roles across a mosaic of 12 short stories based on tales by Don Nigro: the ghost of the extinct dodo, following the protagonists and appearing at key moments; a ghost-actor from the Drury Lane Theatre, aware of his own nature («We must rehearse. We always rehearse.»); the homeowner whose cat ends up in a neighbour's garden, who receives a call from a neighbour from a hundred years ago on a ghost line; the ghost of Van Gogh, trying to remember who he is («I have always been a cracked mirror.»).

Between one role and the next, Igorski always returns to the panel and the brush.
