Il Ritratto di E..., Igorski's interpretation of the face of Giulia Gonzaga

Is a photograph enough?

Igorski answers

Yes, a photo taken with a phone is enough. Only one thing matters: the face must be uncovered.

From the photo I take the likeness; the composition I build myself.

Send me more than one. Several photographs give me a better understanding of the face and of the person.

I take the likeness from the photograph. I build the composition myself and show it to you in the sketch.

Who can you portray?

Igorski answers

One person, a couple, a family. I paint animals too.

If you have no photo of everyone together, send me one photo of each person: I build the composition myself and you see it in the sketch.

I also paint those who are no longer here, from an old photograph. If the photo is faded or damaged, the likeness is harder to reach, because I can only paint what the photo shows.

Pencil or colour?

Igorski answers

I choose the materials for the occasion and the subject of the portrait. Some portraits work better on paper, in pencil or charcoal. Graphite and charcoal sit on the surface and can rub off even under a fixative, so for these I recommend glass and a passe-partout. You choose and order the frame: the portrait comes without one.

Other times it needs colour. Then I use the soft tones of acrylic to give the warmth of the moment, and the canvas gives a sense of volume you can touch.

That is why the conversation always comes first. Then I propose the technique and size that suit your portrait.

How long does it take?

Igorski answers

From two days to two weeks, depending on the size and the technique. A small pencil portrait can be ready in two or three days.

The paint layer asks for patience: each layer is a layer of memories and emotions.

I count the time from the day the deposit arrives and write you the exact date in the confirmation letter.

If it is a gift, add about a week for shipping. In December couriers slow down, so I ship by 15 December.

How much does it cost?

Igorski answers

A pencil or charcoal portrait starts at 100 €, an acrylic one at 150 €. Each added person raises the price: there are more faces to paint. I write you the exact price after the conversation, together with the technique and size I propose.

The price includes the sketch and two rounds of changes. I start painting when the composition convinces you.

Whose portrait is on this page?

Igorski answers

Giulia Gonzaga's, whom they called the most beautiful woman in the world. The portrait commissioned in the sixteenth century by Cardinal Ippolito de' Medici survives only in copies.

I reinterpreted it. Mine, «Il Ritratto di E...», I presented in Fondi on 22 August 2026, at Vivila 2026.

Who answers if I write?

Igorski answers

I do. I am Igor Makhorin (known as IGORSKI), painter and iconographer, based in Fondi (LT), Italy. If you write to info@igorski.it, you write to me. I usually reply within two days.

My background and the exhibitions are on the artist's page.

The process

From the conversation to the portrait

  1. Talking about the idea

Tell me what you would like, I reply with a proposal and a quote. Up to here you commit to nothing.

  2. Deposit and timeline

The deposit confirms the order, and the agreed timeline starts that day.

  3. Sketch for approval

I start painting only after you approve the sketch.

  4. Finished piece and shipping

You see the piece in photos, and after the balance I ship it insured.

Frequently asked questions

Ordering and payment

How do I pay?

In two parts, by bank transfer. The deposit (caparra confirmatoria) confirms the order, and I order the materials and start the sketch. You pay the balance when the piece is finished and you have seen the photographs, before shipping.

How long does it take?

A 20×25 cm icon takes about two weeks in vinyl tempera and up to a month in egg tempera, a large piece or a set longer. I count the time from the day the deposit arrives and write the exact date in the confirmation letter. It also depends on the materials, which I order specifically for your piece.

What if I change my mind after ordering?

You can cancel, but I keep the deposit, because it covers the materials bought for you and the work already done. If I am the one who can't finish the piece, for a reason beyond my control such as illness, you choose whether to wait or get the deposit back.

Do I get an invoice?

Yes, one, for the full price of the piece. The deposit you already paid is part of that price. You find it printed in the parcel and, if you like, I also send it by email. To issue it I need your name, surname, tax code and address.

The sketch and the piece

Can you paint from a photograph?

Yes. I take the likeness from the photograph, but I don't copy it: I build the composition myself and show it to you in the sketch.

What if the sketch doesn't convince me?

Tell me what to change and I redo it. Two rounds of changes are in the price, each further round costs €25. I start painting once the composition convinces you.

What if I don't like the finished piece?

If it doesn't match what we agreed on size, materials or sketch, I correct it: the two-year legal guarantee applies. A piece painted according to the sketch you approved I can't take back just because you don't like it. For work made to order the law excludes the 14-day right of withdrawal for distance purchases.

Can the icon be blessed?

Yes. I suggest taking it to your parish, so the priest can bless it according to the rite of your Church.

Shipping

How much is shipping?

What the courier charges, insurance included, with no mark-up. I tell you the amount together with the balance. Packing is included in the price of the piece, and when I ship I send you the tracking number. I ship across the European Union; outside the Union any customs duties are paid by the recipient.

What comes with the piece?

The certificate of authenticity, which comes with every piece, and care instructions. For delicate materials such as pastel I add a dedicated sheet.

What if the piece arrives damaged?

Until delivery the risk is mine. Photograph the packaging and the piece and write to me, ideally within 48 hours. Then I restore it, paint it again or refund what you paid, and I handle the claim with the courier.
