San Godescalco
Sold
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Saint Godescalc, made on commission and now sold, is a unique image: for a saint so little known, without an established iconography, the composition was discussed together with the client to bring it as close as possible to the traditional iconographic style.
Godescalc was a prince of the Obotrites, a Slavic people of what is now northern Germany, killed in the 11th century during a pagan uprising for his Christian faith. The inscription on the icon is rendered in the prince's own language, following the iconography developed specifically for this commission.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
