San Mosè l'Etiope
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Saint Moses the Ethiopian was made for an individual commission.
According to tradition, Moses was the leader of a band of robbers in 4th-century Egypt before converting and withdrawing to the desert of Scetis among the Desert Fathers. Having become a monk and an example of radical penitence, he was killed by a band of raiders together with several fellow monks, refusing to take up arms in his own defense: his life is remembered as one of the strongest witnesses to conversion and non-violence in the Eastern monastic tradition.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
