San Silvano del Monte Athos
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of Saint Silouan of Mount Athos was made on private commission, to complete a collection of icons the client already owned.
Silouan, a Russian monk who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries at the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mount Athos, is one of the most beloved saints of contemporary Orthodox spirituality, even though he remains a rare subject in traditional iconography. Canonised in 1987, he is remembered above all for the teaching handed down by his disciple, Archimandrite Sophrony: "Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not."
Made in egg tempera with natural pigments on a wood panel, with the halo and background covered in gold on bole, following the most complete technique of the iconographic tradition.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
