Metropolitan Hilarion Kapral
Private collection
The portrait depicts Metropolitan Hilarion Kapral, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia from 2008 until his death in 2022. The client asked for an image in the style of Byzantine iconography, even though it is a portrait: Hilarion was not canonized, so the composition does not include a halo, which is reserved for saints.
The inscription beside the face gives his title and name, following the convention of iconographic epigraphy; the crosier in his left hand is a sign of episcopal authority.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
