Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This Mandylion, made on commission and now sold, is conceived as a home icon: compact format, with a hanging hook fitted on the back.
The face of Christ, imprinted not by human hand, is among the most recognized images in Orthodox iconography, and its origin is told by more than one tradition. This icon follows the one linked to Veronica: along the road to Calvary, the woman wiped Christ's face with a veil, upon which his likeness was miraculously imprinted.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood.
