Arcangelo Gabriele
Private collection
Igorski paints icons following the oldest models and techniques: the face is not the artist's invention but the transmission of a thousand-year-old canon. This icon of the Archangel Gabriel was given as a gift, and forms a Deesis row together with the Theotokos and the Christ Pantocrator of Sinai.
Gabriel is, together with Michael, one of the two archangels named in Scripture: God's messenger, he announces to Zechariah the birth of John the Baptist and to Mary that of Christ, the Annunciation that opens the Gospel. In Byzantine iconography he is depicted as a young winged messenger, often recognisable by his staff of office.
Made in vinyl tempera on plywood, like the other two icons in the row, forming a coherent set in technique as well as in composition.
A commissioned icon: from € 100
