Leonida
Available
In 480 BC Leonidas, king of Sparta, held the pass of Thermopylae with three hundred Spartans against the Persian army of Xerxes. I draw him standing on the rock, before the battle.
As in Greek sculpture, the hero is naked. He wears only the crested Corinthian helmet and sandals, and carries the spear and the round shield. The red Spartan cloak swells in the wind and fills half of the picture.
The work is digital and follows the style of comics: inked outlines, hatching in the shadows, solid colours. Over it I laid folds and scratches, as on a page printed decades ago and left a long time in a drawer.
Limited-edition print on professional paper.
