Mater Dolorosa
Available
"Mater Dolorosa" is a tribute to the face of the sorrowful Madonna and, at once, to Rome's most celebrated Pietà: the one carved by Michelangelo in St. Peter's Basilica. Igorski takes up not the pose but the expression: the veiled head, the closed eyes, the face turned upward in a grief that does not cry out, but composes itself in silence.
The technique builds this double nature of the subject. The softness of the oil pastel, blended to build volume and light on the face, is crossed by broken, nervous lines that draw the veil and the shadows: two opposite languages in the same image, weaving together the fragility of human emotion and the firmness of a mother who weeps without yielding.
Made with professional oil pastels on professional pastel paper, 30 × 40 cm. Wood frame included, with cardboard support and acrylic safety glass protection. Original and one-of-a-kind piece.
