Oil pastel is a soft, almost creamy material: it goes on in successive layers, and each pass stays visible beneath the one before it. It's made of pure pigments, meant to render the colour of nature in its most direct form.
Lemons and leaves come back with striking realism: every detail follows the real shades of the subject, from the bright yellow of the peel to the deep green of the leaves.
Pastel also has a unique tactile quality: volume. For this reason some pieces are presented without glass, so the viewer can fully perceive the three-dimensional effect created by the various layers of pigment.
